Rite of Remembrance - Core Rules
Choosing How You Play
Rite of Remembrance has bespoke rules throughout this book for Solo and Group play. The way the game is played is very similar for each, but with these key differences:
GUIDED
- One player takes on the role of Rune-Keeper (RK), who guides the story and presents the world for the other players. The Rune-Keeper manages the deck of cards and plays the roles of all non-player characters, and even the scenery itself. As the Rune-Keeper, you are the referee and the guide. You are the challenge and the reward. You are both the greatest fan and greatest opposition to the players, and you are here to fairly mediate the flow of the story to cultivate maximum fun for all.
- Each of the other players takes on the role of a single Player Character (PC) within the world. You will create your character, choose their abilities, act or narrate their choices as part of this collaborative story, and roll dice to determine their successes and failures. The ways you interact with this fictional world shape the experience at the table. As a Player Character, you are the driving force of the story.

Your character will most-likely die in their quest, so don’t be afraid to go all out to make awesome moments happen! Be ready to roll up a new character and keep going!

COOPERATIVE
- It is not necessary for just one person to be the Rune-Keeper
- Multiple players take on the story together, sharing the responsibilities of the Rune-Keeper: Players who are not currently in the spotlight manage the deck of cards, Doom, and the consequences that arise from Setbacks. As the spotlight shifts to other Player Characters, the responsibilities of the Rune-Keeper will shift around the table as well.
- This kind of cooperative experience works well when everyone at the table is comfortable with understanding different kinds of game mechanics, and improvising the story on-the-fly. There won’t be any huge, pre-planned adventures. Instead, you will all work together to discover the world and the story as you go.
SOLO
- You take on both roles of Rune-Keeper and Player Character! You will control every character in the story, including one or more “main” characters at a time, who you will track on the character sheet. You will also be the arbitrator of the rules! Of course, this means you could “cheat” at anytime (like in most games) but where’s the fun in that?
- Often it is fun for Solo players to keep a journal of the events of the story. You can write this however you like; as a first-person, detailed recounting, or simply a timeline of events in broad strokes, highlighting key moments. You don’t even have to keep a journal. All up to you!
- Solo players will also have a few solo rules variations throughout this book. Mostly for game balance so you don’t get brutally crushed by an army of undead!
